Dan was the first to begin the project of putting the Christen Eagle together. Most
of us will follow his lead on building the rest of the Eagles. We have to have someone to blame when
something goes wrong!
Report on Progress
I ordered different 4" wheels from Hobby Lobby for $8.50. They seem good and the wheels are
light, but I have no idea how they will last. But they should be better than the sponge ones in the kit.
For the Bennett Smoke pump, I used 8/32 1" long hex bolts through the back of the fire wall.
There is plenty of clearance between the engine and the pump. This location seemed the best for
maintenance. A valve bracket and wood shim are needed to put the valve at this location. The
fuel tank I'll use will be 24 ounces, and the smoke tank will be 32 ounces. The servos will be in the tail. I
ordered servos from FMA. I will be making up custom servo extensions. It seems the 24" extensions
are too long going through the lower wing and tail. Twelve inches seem to work for the wings when used with a "Y" harness.
Engine Mounting
I might have screwed up my fitting of my cowl. I'm 1/8" short on my prop hub? What happened was I
had my spark plug out when I fitted up the cowl to the ring and fire wall. When I put the plug in,
the wire boot hits the cowl and thus the 1/8" problem. But I think there will be a problem no
matter what. It's a tight fit for the engine (G62) head anyway. I'm going to make a spacer up
to space out the prop hub about one 1/8" and 3/8" thick to see what fits best.
Building the stand
Great Planes recommends that you use a Robart stand while putting the fuse together. I decided to
make a stand out of PVC pipe. Once the plane is completed, I'll add longer legs to assist with
assembly at the field.
Control Horns
I used Robart Large point Hinges. I'll use the kit supplied horns.
That's it for now - Dan
